Id take a guess at the resistor pack has burnt out and thats your smell plus not working, there is a guide on here to fix a very cheap fix if you can solder.

I beleive it's behind the glove box which you may have to remove.

From memory if the resistor pack packs up then you will still be able to use the heater fan on full speed, it is just the lower speeds that do not work. Is there a fuse you can buzz out for the heater fan?

as said above does heater number 4 still work ?

heater number 4 has nothing to do with the resistor pack

the prevoius owner may have had a leak through the pollen filler causing water to go into your heater blower this drys the grease inside the blower causing it the squeak

    Default blower siezed

    i had the same problem.
water had blocked the drain bung below the pollen filter so i unblocked that and pulled the filter out to gain access to the top of the motor.
with the ignition OFF (obviously) i squirted wd40 into the top of the blower and kept turning the blower drum by hand a few times. i turned the ignition on and tried it, if it didnt work, ignition off. after a few goes it freed itself and spun up and has been ok since.
i didnt need to dis-assemble the glove box and motor at all.
