    Default Noise when cruising ~60mph+

    Hi all,

Sorry if this has been covered before but a search didn't throw up anything that sounded quite the same. First off, my car - it's a 58-plate Vectra SRi 1.9CDTi (150) hatchback, with no mods and about 59k on the clock.

Now my problem (if it actually is a problem!). When cruising at around 60mph and above in 5th/6th gear, there's a noise in the background. It's not particularly loud, but if you have the radio off - or just down low because SWMBO wants a sleep - then you'll notice it. Whether it occurs at slower speeds or not I can't say for certain, but I've only heard it when cruising along on the dual carriageway/motorway.

Basically it's a kind of 'droning' noise, about 2secs in duration, broken by gaps of around 1-2secs. All very consistent. It doesn't seem to vibrate the car, revs don't drop/increase and there's no noticeable affect on performance. Just the drone, droning on and off, on and off, on and off - you get the picture.

Any more help you might need to help diagnose then just ask and I'll do my best to help.

    Many thanks in advance,
    Coxy

Think that could be your tyres, what tyres have you got on and how much tread is left on them?

Hi, thanks for the quick reply. The tyres are as per what the previous owner had fitted (only got car couple of weeks ago) and all have well above the limit, not far off being new. They are as follows:-

    215/50z R17 91w

    Front - Avon ZV5
    Rear - Radial MA-V1 Maxis

Try altering the tyre pressures and see if it makes a difference, at least for a short while.

You can run with higher tyre pressures, the owners manual says you can raise the tyre pressures to save fuel.
However the wheels at 60mph are going round a couple of times per second, and you have gaps in the sound.

So the noise might still be the wheel bearing/hub assemblies.

In my case the rub - rub - rub noise was rear wheel bearing/hub on the passenger side. I changed both sides at a cost of about £85 for parts.

I even bought some used wheels and tyres, changed them myself and the noise was still there. Most annoying.

The only real way to check is to get a passenger to sit in the front and rear seats and try and narrow the noise down to the front or back, and then maybe to the left or right.

Then you need to remove the wheels and brake calipers and turn the hub assembly and hear/feel it.
