    Default Wired whine sound…!

One of my Vectra’s has developed a wired whining sound which increases and decreases in note and volume as the car is idling.

I thought at first it was the power steering but upon closer inspection I have discovered it is coming from the fuel tank location loudest on the driver’s side at the rear wheel arch by the back door.

I jacked the car up to have a nosey and see if I could sus out the issue. Couldn’t pinpoint the sound but wondered if it could be the fuel filter somehow. The fuel filter it’s self looks like a rusted mass and I assume it has never been changed on the car since new…

So planning on buying a new one and fitting it this weakened…

Before I do this I wanted to ask your expert opinions on the subject to see if you think this is the issue or if it is perhaps something else which is causing the sound (where else should I be looking etc..?)

Off hand does anyone have the part number for the fuel filter so I know what to order and can anyone confirm it it’s a case of simply removing the filter and replacing with a new one or should I be de-pressurising the system some how first?

    Car stats are…

    Model: 2004 Vectra Hatch SRI
    Engine: 1.8 16v Z18XE covering 61k

    Thanks in advance.

Not sure how the Vectra is de-pressurised but on my escort of a few years ago you just popped out the fuel pump fuse and then started the car. After the car died you knew the fuel pressure was low

Sounds more like the fuel pump that may be whining. Be prepared for a fight with the filter, the clips are a complete PITA. If its rusted badly it might be an idea asking a garage to do it because if it bursts you'll be going no where. I looked at doing mine and just got a pro to do it instead. Sure I read last week someone gave up after trying for an hour.
