    Default Fuel Economy

I've noticed a decrease in fuel economy over the last couple of months (Vectra 1.8 LS 2003, petrol) which requires attention. Would anyone be able to assist in devising a list , descending from the most likely, parts to swap/clean/check to help narrow down the problem? I'm guessing it's just a case of trial and error.

The only other present issue on the car concerns the power steering light, and the occasional engine management light which I have been informed after a mechanic scanned the codes both relate to voltage as a result of a fault with the battery/alternator. I'm assuming this will be unrelated to the fuel economy.

What mpg were you getting and what are you getting now?

I'm know very very little about car electrics and I'm sure someone will jump in that does, but but if the alternator's got problems that will effect the fuel consumption. Equally, if the power steering is taking more power that too will effect fuel consumption.

Other than that, off the top of my head...
Check the tyre pressure and alignment, rolling resistence has a massive effect on mpg
Check/replace the air filter, if it's clogged it'll effect mpg
    Check/replace the fuel filter
Check/replace the spark plugs, the condition will show if you've got a problem running rich
Check you brakes, make sure they're not binding
    Clean you throttle body
Clean your EGR valve if you've got one

    Hope this helps. :-)

Thanks for the quick reply. The MPG has dropped from around 38 to 20-25. I had an idea to check the things you have mentioned, but had no idea in which order to do so!
