1.9 Fuel filter housing?

Probably a long shot this.
Does anyone know which fuel line on the filter housing sends the fuel in? the top or bottom one?
I guess one is 'In' and the other is 'Return'?

They normally have an arrow on them indicating the flow direction

Would it be possible/safe to disconnect one and switch the ignition on - you'd need a container to catch the fuel as it comes out?

Be careful - Make sure its safe to do it - wont the fuel come out with some force once the pump tries to pressurise the system?

No idea at all to be honest. At least it's diesel not petrol. Not easy to ignite diesel.

The 1.9 uses a lift pump in the tank, you will get a lot of diesel come out so not the best thing to do.
Sorry cant remember which pipe does what.
Why do you need to know?

It's really hard to start after sitting for a good while. I've replaced everything that it could be.
My theory is that the diesel is running back to the tank, so I want to fit a non return valve on the correct pipe.
Apparently this problem is not uncommon on diesels of any make.

As the CDTI has a lift pump try switching on the ign for 10 secs then off then try starting that should fill the pipes with diesel and confirm if diesel is leaking away.
When it does start do you get a cloud of white smoke from the exhaust? if so could be a leaky injector, you can confirm with a leak off kit.
