    Trim : Design

    Engine : 1.8VVTi 16v

    Year : 2008

    Mileage : circa 28K

Default 24 hours after fitting a K&N Panel Filter

ok, fitted my K&N panel filter after work on Friday (had already done the airbox mod a week or so ago but not really noticed any difference!lol)

went up to Milky Beans on Saturday morning to pick something up from Rich (Kman247) - might be asking for assistance fitting it at the heritage centre meet if I get it sorted in time! lol)

anyway, imho, the entire point of MK is to get up to at least 70mph between the roundabouts!lol

I hadn't really noticed any difference by doing the airbox mod, but to be fair, I had only really gone to work and back, and not done any longer runs.

Ended up going to MK twice on Saturday (after visiting Rich I went food shopping in the massive Asda there!lol) then went back to meet up with my Dad and Brother for lunch and then to the cinema (for the first time in over 10 years!lol) to watch Avengers Assemble - great film btw!lol

Anyway, back to topic!lol even though I only have a 1.8VVTi, I definitely noticed a big improvement in the performance - the car was reving better - infact, where before I would hit the rev limiter at just over 50mph in 2nd, it would go to 60mph with ease, and sound good doing it!lol

The engine note improved dramatically at higher speeds - unfortunately, at lower speeds there doesn't seem to have been much change following the airbox mod, but hey ho!lol

Will have to wait and see if things settle down after a while, but to be honest, I am impressed after 100+ miles of driving today!lol

Anyway, sorry for the long post, but wanted to share my thoughts on the first 24 hours or so follow my latest upgrade!lol

    Any comments welcome as always!

    Dave

Are you saying that by doing the airbox mod, you have disabled the rev limiter ??

If you were previously on the limiter in second at 6500 doing 50mph, then doing 60 in second now will take you up to 7,800rpm

If so, you want to be careful there as you risk spinning a main bearing shell or snapping a rod bolt if your over revving which will destroy your engine in seconds

No fella, not saying that at all-just saying that it appears to be reving more freely & that I appear to be getting a better speed out of the car before the rev limiter is reached!

As per title, its only the first 24 hours or so, but wanted to share my thoughts so far-i'm sure things will settle down after a few days!lol

You can't get a higher speed before the limiter is reached, a certain rpm into your gearbox = a certain road speed, but if you get there quicker with the filter it's all good

Err....yes you can. Let's say you do a mod that gives you an extra 10 BHP (being hypothetical, so don't all jump in that a K&N doesn't give you 10 BHP), why would the car not go faster than before even though the rev limiter hasn't changed? Simply put, at 5000 RPM, the car with the extra 10 BHP will be a little bit faster than the standard car at the same RPM.

Sounds good, was always thinking of fitting a K&N filter to my 1.8vvt. I will be now. Thanks for the info.

I am struggling to see your argument here??

If the engine is rotating at a certain rpm, then regardless of the bhp of the engine, the ratios of the drivetrain/gearbox will determine your actual road speed. Yes, a car with more bhp will get to that speed quicker, but the actual speed for a given engine rpm must remain the same.
