    Default Cerntal 'Service History' database

So - was debating this with a chap at work today who unfortunatly has just bought a car without me looking at it first - lol..
On inspection today at work - and inspection of the service book - we have unfortunatly discovered that its got false service history. the book stamp was in exactly the same place all the way through the 6 stamps - and the writting was the same and also same pen colour etc..
On calling the garage in the stamp - they have never seen the car!!

So - we got talking about central databases.

They do this for MOT which allows you to track all the history of your MOT's, so I think that there should be the same sort of system for Service History - or any mechanical work on cars that garages / independants do.

Ok - it would mean you have to have a 'subscription' to a central run database that I know would mean an admin overhead on both the garage / independant, plus the organisation holding the details.. But wouldnt it be great to be able to put your reg / vin / whatever into a database and get out all the work thats been carried out by any subscribed garage / indie..

If you are 'allowed' to stamp a service book then you have to subscribe etc..

What do you think - will it ever happen??

    Good idea

Doubt it will ever happen though

EDIT >> Do main dealers not have access to all work that has been done on a vehicle by any branch of that dealer?

Whilst I think your idea is admirable, I think there are just too many flaws for it to ever be a reality.

I belive it would be just as easy and open to abuse for rouge indipendants to falsify the data, as it is for them to stamp a book up a couple of times. All you need is a "mate" who works at a garage and you can pretty much get what you want. Just last week, somebody on this forum found out his car had been MOT'd in this way by somebody on the other side of the country. If they can do it on a govenment official system, they could easily do it on a service database.

Administration cost would just add more cost onto the motorist, and push even more rouge practices.

Stamps are easy to cheat, but as you have done, you can always pick up the blower and verify them yourself. Better still, find a car that comes with recipts. Most good second hand cars looked after properly will have a book full of recipts.

And that mate I think is a brilliant point.. I suppose someone would have to pay for it and I certainly wouldnt want it to be the motorist...

TBH - yes - agree re receipts.. I like seeing receipts for parts for the cars I buy over just stamps etc...

The likes of Merc and BMW - yes... aparently so.

Vauxhall = no.. The car I just bought had a dealer history by a dealer in reading way.. So went into my local 'Now' Vauxhall (Heathrow) and spoke to the chaps there that I know - and all they can see is history that the 'Now' Vauxhall franchise have done.. Once it goes outside that they cant - and Vauxhall central also dont hold that info centeral aparently..

Went to the dealer in reading and they pulled up the info straight away.

BMW - ANY BMW dealer hooks into the main BMW database and everything that the car has had by any BMW dealer anywhere is logged.

I called Vx to ask if my car had had the handbrake recall done. They confirmed it had and that the DPF had been replaced too at an earlier date
I suppose if any work is done by a franchised dealer then it will probably be on a central DB

I would dispute that. Vauxhall's records of warranty work carried out is very different from records of servicing work. Vauxhall pay the dealers for the warranty work they do, that's why they have records of it. When you have a car serviced, it's merely a contract between you and the garage, Vauxhall don't get involved and choose not to collate data about it.

Mazda also use on online service book, when I had my 6 I had to ask for a proper book, the dealer said "we keep all details on computer now no need for a service book"

I still got one and ensured it was stamped.

Not all independent garages keep the records.

I know our garage isnt computerised and if someone phoned to ask we wouldnt be able to tell without going through a shed load of invices that would take for ever.
