Default Water Pump / cambelt broken.

    Good morning all.
Some advice please on what my position is regarding my Signum 1.9.
About 6 months ago I purchased my 1.9 Signum and as it had done 100k on original cambelt got it done straightaway.
I phoned around my local garage said they only warrantied the belt if the water pump was also renewed so quoted accordingly.
Phoned the Main Stealer who said no need to change the pump as matter of routine but only if it neded it so price was obvioyuly a lot less.
So I had the Main Steeler replace the belt & kit.
You quesssed it 5k miles later both have died, I put it that way as I don`t know if the bearings going on the pump shredded the belt or a wrongly tensioned belt destroyed the pump. The M/D have stripped the head off and I`m awaiting their call.
    So my questions are.
Was the local Garage correct in saying the pump should have also been renewed, in which case the M/d was in error.
Or as the M/D claimed to have tested the pump and found it OK can I have expected more than 5k miles in which case was the belt wrongly tensioned.
Either way When you get a professional garage to fit a new cambelt its to stip happening exactly what has happened, and i`m inclined to think tehy have a level of fault.
I wondered what the more experienced members felt, and what would be my best course of action. any ideas or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
    Thankyou in advance

the Water pump should always be changed in my opinion when its driven by the cam belt on a cambelt change.. Just makes no sense to say it doesnt.

Very bad call by the dealers..

I'm assuming that if they said to replace it only if it needed it then they would have checked the pump when fitting the belt.......if they have checked it and then it's failed then i'd agree that the buck kinda stops with them.

They did the work, the work they have done has since failed. I take it that this happened within a few months.

For the 40 quid a pump costs I would have told them to do it anyway but they obviously know better

I allways change the pump. For £25-30 its not worth taking the risk, as you have found out. They are totaly responsible, for whats happened. You should get a curtasy car and dont give them a penny. They should pay you. Idiots

I could be wrong but I am sure that I have seen the TIS article for a CDTI belt change that states it recommends a w/pump change at the same time...

hmm - maybe someone with access to TIS could look for you.. Go do the dealer armed with that and they have not a leg to stand on.

Not that this will make you feel any better, but I had my belt a water pump changed (by an indy garage), the 'new' pump lasted 16,000 miles and 16 months before it started rattling and I had to have a new belt and pump fitted (at a different garage obviously...).

The dealer wants naming & shaming & then shafting... good practice is to always replace the pump at the same time as the belt.

I don't think I have heard of any 1.9CDTI belts failing without the pump having failed? My pump was making a racket at about 80K and I replaced it with the belt but the belt that came off looked perfect still. My local VX garage advise to change both together.
