Have you checked out your heat shield John?
Just a thought.
my dmf has been rattling for months but i dont get it when the clutch is pressed down
Sounds like it to me. This was my very first symptom, sounds like it's coming from the passenger footwell and more so when you release the accelerator pedal?
Well that was my first thought bud but the rattle is only there with the clutch pedal pressed down. If I rev it with the pedal up there is no rattle.
That's why I think it may be the outer plate of the dmf rattling when there is no load on it
Even when you give the engine a rev?
My hatch was doing this but I didn't know it was the dmf at that point and it lasted like that for over 6 months without getting worse (in fact it was no different when I sold it and I only realised it may have been on its way since getting the estate).
My new estate had the same symptoms and took a few months before the engine started to sound rough. I wouldn't worry about the slight rattle until the engine starts to sound rough and you can feel the change when you press the clutch down.
Edit: Another point on my hatch: Although I had the rattle the car drove great. My estate sounded like a bag of spanners until I got the DMF replaced and now it drives soooo smooth and the fuel economy has gone up slightly.
