    Default Need advice guys-CDTI 150

    Hey guys,

As some of you have probably read im out of a job and hence am looking for a car on the cheap'ish.

I went to see one today which is owned by an ex-colleague of mine so I know he is trustworthy, but I need some advice about the car.

Its a 2005/54-reg Vectra 1.9 CDTI Design 150 which he has owned since it was 6 months old and has been fully serviced and maintained.

But its not had a Flywheel problem YET, no alternator issues, cambelt not changed, and I have inspected the manifold and the bar is OFF and that bar area is covered in oil.

The car has been standing for some time and he said its been running fine until he was given his company car. It pull perfect and gears, etc are all OK.

Now the car has got 125k on it but about 100k of that has been done by the same person.

    My questions:
    - how long will the inlet manifold continue for in the current state, with the bar off and oil around that area;
    - how can I assess the the flywheel?

Its got no MOT or TAX as its been standing but he is a very genuine guy and I worked with him.

Other than that, its got one or two marks here or there but nothing critical, its all part and parcel of its age.

Potentially I could get it very cheap.

    Your comments PLEASE.

    Bye bye Vec B

OK so firstly - you will NEED to do a cambelt before you start to drive it in any anger.. Dont risk running it mate at 125k with no cambelt change..
A cambelt kit from VX I think is just over the £100 mark and you shoudl also do the water pump too...

IF the dual mass flywheel is not rattling - thats a good sign.. Drive the car and can you hear it clunk / knock when the gear engages at clutch bite - or when you come on / off the power with a jerk - if so its likely to need it soon - BUT they can make a noise for YEARS and 1000's of miles without failing.. Expect to pay about £850 for full clutch kit and DMF change.

Inlet - well - its failed already.. The swirl bearings will be shot.. BUT - if you can move 1, 2, and 4 freely (no 3 has a motor attached to leave that alone) then you can glue them open at the 10oclock position and it will run 'as normal'. That really depends on how worn they are mate...

Alternator - you just dont know when they will fail.. Put the display in test mode and see what the volts are running at now.. Anything lower than 13.5 is a problem... They are about £150ish to buy.

Shout if you need anymore matey....
