Default What do we know about MG TF's?

My girlfriends after a new car and got her heart set on a convertible, I never even considered the TF because of the K series head gasket issues but after looking at the alternatives, Astra, megane, mx5 etc these seen really good value for money!

Anyway after abit of research it turns out that the 1.6 is quite bulletproof compared to the gasket munching more common 1.8 engine.

So has anyone ever owned one or had any experience with one to help us make our mind up?

Not had one but ya right keep away from the 1.8 although when the head gasket goes there is a uprated gasket that stops it from going more stronger or Sumit I was looking at getting a zt 1.8t and has same issue just keep a eye on coolant levels al in all the mg are a very cheap car

doesnt really matter mate if the gasket is going to go it will go but the main cause of the gasket going is people not letting the k series engine warm up before driving it harshly,
Also as said above if the gasket does go there is a stronger gasket called the mls gasket which is the stronger one.
I know AA Autosport charge £360 for the gasket replacing along with head skimming cambelt and thermostat and new water pump with six months guarantee as many garages will not guarantee the work.

For some reason I've been looking at a few MGf /tf on eBay, as a fun little run around motor.

The prices are pretty good and you can get a good low milage example for 1450 upwards.

Had gaskets aside (any k series runner) I have noticed a few common rust spots, the front wings seem to go around the bumper area and spots on doors.

Shop around as some come with a hard top as well for same money.

Never heard or noticed the rust issue, but suppose that comes with all cars over 10 years old. Alot seem to be registered with the Mg owners club as well so they should have been well looked after, a hard too would be a added bonus we'll keep our eyes open

Cheers Paul, will be looking at getting a 1.6 for insurance and tax reasons but I'll remember to pour a bucket of water over it to check for leaks

How many head gaskets did they go through? Think we'll look for one that's already been done then just keep an eye on it, been told there a nightmare to work on too due to being mid engined and not alot of room
