Default EGR - When do I clean it??

There are many threads on here about the EGR's clogging up or failing. What are the syptoms to look out for? And what sort of mileage do they tend to become unreliable?

My car has done 26k miles - should I be looking to remove it and clean it yet? Cheers

I was getting lots of lag and loss of power when pulling away from a stand still or changing up the gears. So I cleaned mine (last year) this did help. I'm getting the same problems again but this time I unplugged the EGR and gave it a test run, lag was gone and acceleration was good. But having an estate i've plugged it back in because of my DPF will get clogged up otherwise. So mine is due a clean again. Most people on here will advise a remap and get it mapped out, which is what i will do when i can save the money. If your suffering lag, loss of power then maybe worth a look.

If your getting the problems i had then maybe worth a look, but if the car drives fine I would leave alone for now, your best bet would be to try and get it mapped out as soon as you can.

...so can the EGR be removed completely (sounds too simple a solution to me), or does that cause other issues? The reason I'm asking is because I've noticed fleabay selling EGR blanking plates for the VX/Fiat engines...

Bought one of the blanking plates off of the ebay and got a tuner to remap my car and remove the EGR valve from the ECU.

    .
Did it make a positive difference, and are there any side-effects (ie, damage to cat/DPF, emissions etc?
