It will depend on how much throttle you're giving it. If you're pushing down on the throttle enough to think you're trying to accelerate (or going uphill) then it will drop down to give you more power.

. It does irritate me a little that I can force the upchange as early as I would on a manual.

Mine does this and yeah waiting untill 60 to have to change to 6th is rather annoying but after a year of it I've about mastered it, and can see why when u do finally get into 6th as it drops to around 1000rpm, so at 50mph it would only need around 500rpm.

thats why i like the auto box in my merc ! i can dab the gearstick to hold a gear so it does hunt or drop into 5th at 25 miles an hour , odd that VX never fitted a tip box on at least the 3.0 deisel

You can on my Vec auto push it to the left and manually select the gear it won't go up unless you make it but it will drop down as you slow down in case you forget

Yeah the auto does have a tip-tronic gearbox but the auto mode will hunt if you put to many revs on at the bottom end of 6th gear range.

Mine only likes 6th above 70/80 really, in an average speed camera'd 50 motorway it sits in 4th or 5th. Knowing a friend who sub-contracts in and out GM, I queried this. His view? Too high a gear and the diesel is actually LESS economical, you get the @chugging@ effect, which in turn clogs everything to bits.

Now I can understand this, as the generators (during my days as a generator hire fitter) which ran off load all the time were caked to hell in carbon - have you ever set an exhaust on fire during a load test - so I guess the softwear for the ECU decide the raised rev's (about 200 on mine) are preferential to a carbon'd up engine.

My BMW had a 5 speed auto which always started in 2nd funnily enough!
