gearbox whine???? not sure

hi all, had my 08 vec 1.9cdti 120 (104k) about 2 months now.
Love the car and the grunt, but i'm sure there is a bit of whining/transmission noise coming from the centre console area, hoping its not a gearbox problem.
Would a gearbox whine when the car is in neutral or clutch depressed while still moving, because the noise is still there?? Can't understand where its coming from, or is it just engine noise.
Anyone else noticed this with the cdti 6spd???

thanks but,
only 2weeks ago had cambelt kit and waterpump done, can't hear anything strange when stood still/idling.

That's a different belt - the timing belt. The alternator belt is a separate one (easier to change as well).
