Default Releasing hand brake self adjust mech

Any one had any experience resetting the self adjusting mechanism?.. manual says push piston/spring back and press down transport fixing to lock but i can't get the piston to go in... starting to lose my rag with it and now fear I will end up finding Mr Haynes and 'with a suitable tool'... poke him in the eye

This sounds like one of those simple jobs that turn into a nightmare, but for once I had no issue with it.

Why do you need to do this? Have you replaced the handbrake lever assembly or handbrake cables? There's no need to do this if you have replaced the rear disks/pads - just hold the button in and pump the handbrake lever a few times until the self-adjuster has had time to adjust itself fully to the new disks/pads.

    1. Chock the wheels and release the handbrake.

    2. Push rod towards the back of the car. It's stiff (pushing against spring) and hard to get at so I used a long metal bar - inserted into the gap between the front of the rod and the front of the recess that it sits in) to push it with.

    3. Push the metal locking clip down so that it engages. The self-adjusting mechanism is now locked in the 'transport position'.

To release the mechanism and return the handbrake to normal operation, just pull up the handbrake lever.

It did start off as just changing the pads.. but then found a seal gone so removed caliper to reseal it.. needed slack in cable to attach cable to caliper.. sorted it now ... there is a sleeve at the rear of piston that should get pushed in when lever is down to disengage ratchet so you can push the piston in... a bit of fudging with a screwdriver sorted it Cheers guys
