Default The worst MOT experience EVER...!

Theres no point offering this out for answers, as it would not be guessed.

    So here it goes.

Took my car for MOT this morning, (Friday 13th) should of known not to.

The MOT never even got started, because the system through up a message "to early to preserve MOT anniversary", which the MOT tester thought was strange as my MOT had already expired. So the tester then checked and found that my car was showing as having been MOT'd on the 31/01/2012 in Kent. He then printed me off the pass certificate showing my reg, full VIN and the garage that did the MOT (Mercedes Dealership of all places).

I have never been to Kent, but apparently my car, or a car with my REG and VIN number has.

Now I have called the Police, and no surprise but according to them no crime has been committed. They think its more to do with human error than cloning, or anything else illegal. And arent even going to investigate it. I am expected to wait and see, and if I start receiving parking or NIPs in the post then to call back.

I hope it is a human error and not something more, as I would hate a visit from armed officers a 5am looking for an armed robber.

Anyone else had experience of their car being cloned...?

Is there anything I should do, does anyone think reporting to the DVLA/VOSA would get a better response..? I have already called the dealership in Kent but they tell me anything.

Send a letter recorded delivery to VOSA. Keep a copy yourself with the receipt attached to it.

What happens if the police stop you for something and ask to see your mot cert, I know it is done online.
Suppose your car is involved in an accident and found to be unroadworthy, Who gets the blame? Amost certainly you.
I would contact VOSA, and DVLA to be onthe safe side.

So on the Plus side you have an MOT for free, And someone is running around with no MOT?

You don't get a certificate now, just a receipt for you records, the receipt is just black text laser printed on plain white A4 paper and is not regarded as proof that you have an MOT as anyone with a cheap mono laser printer could make one.

That's an interesting question? has the car plate been cloned or has some mechanic recorded the wrong reg, it seems a bit hard to do these days as they have to confirm the make, model, colour etc before they start, at least that's how the local council testing stations do it.

Ok serious head on. When you take a car for an MOT do they still not put the Chassis number in? If so then surely when the system cross references the chassis number against the number plate it would throw up an error would it not?

Quite a few things to take note of here

First if the VOSA database shows your vehicle has a valid MoT, then you do NOT need to take any action

If you suspect (as you do) that a MoT has been issued elsewhere incorrectly, then report it
Send copies (not originals) of latest MoT to VOSA by Recorded delivery
Wait for their response before taking any further action

If VOSA confirm a duplicate MoT has been issued elsewhere, then you can report the matter to the Police
When you receive this letter your car will then most probably have had its MoT record update, so you will need to have the MoT carried out immediately

You can check the MoT status online yourself :
    http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring...ot/DG_10020539
I would suggest you perform this once a week (a Thursday would be best) once you have sent your report to VOSA

    With respect to the Police
Did you report this locally, or to the constabulary Road Policing Unit?
If you reported it locally I am not surprised by the response...
Most local officers wouldn't even know the latest change to MoT documents!
