    Default Grand national?

I know nothing about horses or the racing of them but like to have a little flutter on the Grand National because it seems to be the one day of the year when SWMBO (she who must be obeyed) won't tell me off for gambling. Over the past 3 or 4 years I've not won a bean (probably because I pick a horse based on how clever/funny it's name is) but this year I thought I'd try find out how it all works? Do we have any members who can help? Which horses should I be betting on and what kind of bet is more likely to return a win?

I've backed horses for a few years now. The National is a different keetle of fish though! Each horse has the potential to win, as long as it can get round. Top horses can get unseated, fall, interfered with by loose horses etc, so it really is a proper "gamble".

I won't offer any tips, but the following are the ones I've backed:
    Synchronised
    Sunnyhillboy
    Planet Of Sound
    State Of Play
    Shakalakaboomboom

They all have the right credentials, but Synchronised is carrying top weight.

If it was me in your position, I'd probably pick two horses, around 16-22/1, and stick a pound each way on them. Cost £4, but even a place will clear your money. You won't be rich, but I always find it adds a bit of interest to the race if you've got a bit of money on it!

Whatever you pick, best of luck!

As a side note, I'll have around £30 riding on my selections, but will happily see my horses come nowhere near if all 40 come back safely.

The Grand National forms just one race out of many that take place at Aintree over a few days

The first race yesterday was hillarious
One horse was expected to romp it, so much so that the owners had put on £500K to win (not even placed)
Sure enough, it came in first

However even with that, two other horses managed to bungle it and NOT finish...

For the novice, do two bets on the National
    Pick one to win
Pick another to be placed (each way)
This makes it more interesting as you are then watching both and for different reasons
I usually a promotion bet for the horse to win (as there is less chance of this)

We've done a sweepstake at work and I've drawn Giles Cross & Neptune Collonges.

Think I'll have a couple of quid on Giles Cross each way and a couple on Chicago Grey to win.

The horse they put the half million on was at odds of 1-5 so they got back 600k including the 500k stake !!!!!

Plus the prize money for winning the race, £56270, plus the 12 pack of beer...
An apt name for the horse
    Big Bucks

When they put that bet on the rate was 1-5, but at close it was 2-9

The bet I've placed is West End Rocker to win. Giles Cross each way & Chicago Grey each way.

The wife's put each way bets on West End Rocker & Organisedconfusion
