my 2.2DTI used to puff a cloud of white/grey smoke first thing in the morning. It was put down to condensation build up as the engine cooled over night.

However, different colours of smoke can mean different things so.....

As above, very common on colder mornings (if you're not used to owning a diesel), plus it depends on what the conditions were when the engine was switched off

As above, let us know what colour the smoke is
If it is anything other than clear (water) or white (oil and water), then it is not normal

    Keep your eye on it
Sounds normal as mine does this a few times each month
This is due to advance combustion and unburnt oil (residual fuel in cylinder) being expelled through the exhaust

You can solve this be leaving the engine start until the glowplug light has gone out, then waiting a further 5 to 10 seconds as the heat dissapates across the engine block
The disadvantage is this can drain the battery (as the glowplugs remain live until you switch the engine on)

On my first diesel you HAD to wait until the glowplug light had gone out
On my Vectra C, after reading the handbook, I simply make sure the glowplug light comes on, then start the engine
I've got a really bad habit now of just going straight to engine start...
I personally think this is bad advice in the handbook, as this is when I get black smoke (completely unburnt fuel through the exhaust, which only occurs on a V6) on start up

Glad I came across this, same thing happening to mine.

I also just jump in and start, very rare I waited for glow plugs, mostly only waited when I'm still messing about with my phone or nav once already in car.

During the winter (and cold mornings) I almost always wait for the glowplug light to go out, but got lazy about this recently
