Default 1.8 Petrol Revs Drop Engine Cuts Out

    Help!!!

    2002 Vectra 1.8 LS (Petrol) 87k miles

I left for work this morning and started to have problems, it's only a 10 min drive but from the very point of leaving the house i noticed i had a problem...

When the cars in neutral the revs drop off right down till the engine cuts out, I could see it happening and attempted to rev a little but it seemed to lag sometimes and bounce back. If i was stationary at a junction the engine would just die and need to be restarted.

Could anyone point me in the right direction for a fix?

I used to have a 2000 1.8 16v Astra and the only problem I had with it in the 4 years I owned it was idle stability. All I used to do was remove the air inlet to the throttle housing and give the throttle housing a good clean with carb cleaner and a rag on the end of a screwdriver. This always fixed my idle issues, although ideally I would have removed it, cleaned it up properly and replaced gaskets as necessary.
I think there are a few designs of throttle housing/idle valves though, so maybe someone else can help more.
    Good luck.

Thanks guys, comments appreciated but its getting worse ...

    Update:

Garage had a look at the car today and phoned me at 1pm to say it was sorted (throttle housing needed a clean as DieselWig said)

I asked garage to give it a service fuel, filters, oil & plugs, 5pm they call me to say its not ready for collection as the engines running lumpy and it wont rev.

Any ideas what the next step could be? reading forums i'm hoping its not a blocked cat :s

I know its not the same manufacturer but my Fiesta (sorry for swearing) started to do this - the first problem was it blew a plug out of the head, complete with the thread from the head, this lead to the head having to be replaced by the new owner.
Dont mean to panic you but the symptoms seem very similar - revs dropping when at junctions / on idle to the point of cutting out and running lumpy - Fiesta was on 3 cylinders as the 4th plug was on top of head.

Sounds like the MAF too me too, might be worth giving the sensor a spray with contact cleaner and see if that helps. Has the EML light on the dash come on?

We had 51 Astra VVT that had the idle problems - fixed by cleaning the throttle. Another two incidents were due to 1) loose connection on the temp. sensor 2) Kwikfit fitter left the exhaust sensor wire off.

I would say garage has disturbed a sensor wire /connector of some sort.
