    Default Engine Management Light Issue

    Hi,

    Vetra C 1.9 Diesel SRI 120 bhp '55' Reg (Registered December 2005)

I have had a look in the forums and can't find a satisfactory answer so I would be very grateful for any assistance with the following issue.

Scenario: In the morning or after 2-3 hours rest my Vectra will keep the engine management light on but it will go out after a few miles travel and stays out if I restart the car within 1-2 hours rest.

I noticed recently that if I switch the ignition on and off 2 or 3 times without starting and removing the key each time the light goes out and stays out before I start the engine. I have now got into the habit of doing this when starting but it's far from ideal as I'd like to sell the car soon for something smaller and don't want to sell it on with a fault. The only other symptom I get when the car is playing up is that it splutters on inclines, so if I go up a hill the engine response is sometimes poor - It only seems to be on hills however that's perhaps because the car is under a bigger stress. The EGR valve was replaced to address this but made no difference. I also bout a Memoscanner U480 diagnosis code reader but this doesn't produce a code when the EML is on. The garage I took it to also could not find a code to correspond with the EML.

I've had no other major problems with the car as it has been very reliable for the 5 years that I've had it.

Any help with the above would be appreciated.

    Brian

You mention you turn the ignition on, don't start the engine, and the EML warning light then goes out

What about then you insert the key and start immediately?
Does the warning light stay on, or does it do the same; stays on briefly then goes out

Has the engine entered safe mode when the warning light appeared for the first time? (engine tone changes, idle revs increase slightly, and limited power)

Have you cleaned or changed the air flow meter that will sometimes cause a eml to come on if faulty or dirty and could cause lack of power
