    confused Radiator Coolant Fans

Hello all 1st post on forum ive had a good look around regarding my problem but havent fixed it yet. Ill start at the beginning, I have a 2008 vectra z19dt 120. Ive noticed over the last few weeks the temp gauge in the car has been a bit erratic so ive replaced the thermostat housing and coolant now the gauge usally sits around 85. The main problem i have is ive never heard the radiator fans running, the car heats up to over 90 when idle but no fans kick in i always turn engine off just in case of a roasting. Ive tried disconnecting the temp sensor on thermostat when engine is runng and fans do kick in. But they will not kick in when car is over heating. Help.Thanks.

The radiator fan cuts in when the gauge gets to 92-93ish, then it'll drop to about 88 and the fan will stop.

The radiator fan is quiet and can barely be heard normally.

An exception to this was when mine overheated last year (bleed screw popped out). Gauge shot up to 107 and the A/C fan started up as well. They could be heard over the engine. I was lucky.....!

Leave the engine running and watch the guage till they kick in to check that the contacts are not dirty. As Tony says they kick on over 90ish

Don't leave it running unattended remember to watch the guage. Should the warning light come on switch off straight away.

Sounds crazy ill check it out. Also can anybody confirm that the temp gauge on these vectra's are a small bit erratic.. meaning car is idle so it heats up and gauge goes up, start to drive air then passes through rad gauge starts to go down. So by nature gauge moves about a bit on a daily basis?

Tested today i put cdc40 into diagnostic testing mode and brought the car for a spin. The gauge stuck around 85 until i parked for 20 mins then it rose to 98 and the rad fan kicked in and lowered it down to 94.All is well. Thanks for your help lads... much appreciated.

Glad your sorted - the temperature gauge on most cars are not 100% accurate - I thought mine was running a bit cool - it ran at exactly 85 on the gauge but when I checked the actual temperature with a digital thermometer it was 88 degrees. Another indication that your fans are working ok is when you disconnect the temp sensor on the thermostat - the fans will operate as the ECU reads the lack of a signal from the sensor as a temperature related problem and to be on the safe side, believing that the engine is overheating, causes the fans to come on - which indicates the fans are operating ok.
