    Default Servicing, DIY or Garage?

My car has full service history up until now, mostly main dealer. Its on 74k now and its a 2004 CDTi.

Is it worth carrying on with putting it to a garage and keeping the log book all stamped up? Or....do i start to save on the labour costs and do it myself?

    Whats everyones thoughts on this?

Might add a poll to see what you all do

don't know if it counts for much when trading a car in but i think private buyers like to see main dealer servicing. mine has full vsh and i will use main dealer until she goes

I do it all myself keeping all the receipts in my eyes looks far better someone saying I do all work myself but here's big pile of receipts.

Or someone saying heres my car full service history.
All it is is a book with stamps you can buy fakes of eBay.

I personally don't like the servicing schedule from
A dealership. Too long between oil changes

I service it myself, I write everything down in the service book but its just not stamped, keep good records and receipts and I cant see a problem.

IMO anything over about 5 years wont benefit value wise from a full main dealer service history but it's certainly reassuring to see the Griffin stamped across the pages so may help with speed of sale (if selling privately).

As for DIY or not bothering, it's risky as most (if not all) warranty and breakdown cover policies insist on a car being maintained to the manufacturers service schedule by a legitimate garage. Having said that, I can't imagine the above disputing a claim if the work has been carried out conscientiously to a professional level.

    *EDIT*

I do find it reassuring to see a good history of receipts, invoices etc.. be it from an indie, dealer or DIY job

Mine is serviced where I bought it.http://www.carbase.biz/home

They supplied it and provided the warranty. I paid a little extra to get discounted servicing, (£185 for a major service) and free MOT's whilst I own the car. The car came with a full Vauxhall history but I'm happy with their servicing. It's also nice to know that if anything goes wrong it's all fixed for free. It's in on Friday for a new EGR valve and they've also replaced the A/C condenser, all under warranty.

I only lift the bonnet to check the oil, water and screenwash. Anything else is their problem.

Not really an option for me to choose from

Whilst under warranty I use only dealership
Once the warranty has expired I then use a local garage, unless the dealership is cheaper

Strange thing on my current car is that my local garage can't even get close on what the dealership charge for servicing; garage quoted £250 and dealership quote £150

For general wear and tear items (not usually covered by warranty) I use my local garage
For tyres, I normally buy them myself and the local garage fits them

On my first two cars, pretty much the same dealership until the warranty expired then I serviced them myself
Then I turned 30 and prefer to sit back in comfort...

Mine's got the first three dealer stamps in it from when I bought it I deliberately had it dealer serviced the first few times as it was new and I just kinda wanted to, but I refuse to pay the money they charge ongoing and especially now it's seven and a half years old. The money I'd pay out on dealer servicing would pay for me to do it several times. I'm a qualified mechanic why pay someone through the nose to do it for me?
