With 7 speeds - most probably.

Putting it on the highest speed will probably not allow the system to get cold enough (i.e. you're taking more out than it can give, especially if the system is a few years old).
What is it like if you use a lower speed setting?

If the light on the button isn't working then its probably fuse / electrical related.

... unless the Vectra does the same as the Senator and Omega did... when the low pressure cutout prevented the system working (due to a gas leak) you could press the button as much as you liked yet the AC wouldn't come on and neither would it's light.

Smart move would be to check the fuses first, but my money would lean toward the old favourite - leaking condenser. Residual AC isn't actually aircon as the engine and therefore compressor isn't running.... it's merely a 'permitted run-on'.

No, it doesn't. My A/C didn't work when I got it cos it was low on refridgerant but the light came on.

Ignition off, and press the auto button. Radio display will then show "residual AC on", or something like that.

Ah!! you've got the automatic AC system, not electronic climate control; which is something half way in between the bog standard AC, and climate control.

Only the climate control has the residual AC feature.
