Default HOW TO: change a front spring on a FORD Mondeo

A spring chamge on a Vectra C should take less than an hour, which should include two tea breaks and a bacon sarnie.

    So the story begins:

My neighbour from across the comes over and asks me if I can have a look at his Mondao (refered to from now on as Poo). He had a loud bang come from the front of his Poo and asked if I could see what had gone wrong.
Quick look under the front wing showed up a broken spring.
No problems I can do that for you, shouldn't take long.......

    1.Take wheel off
2.Find that shock is held by bolt into hub carrier, undo bolt to find that you cannot drop the hub low enough to get shock out. Also not helping is that the spring broke at the top,has gone past the top mount and is pushing against the bodywork and therefore pushing back down against the hub.
3.Take grinder to spring, struggle but get the shock out. Find out that the broken spring has damaged the top mount resulting in all the ball bearings going AWOL
4.Replacement is reverse of the above, no its fu#*%ing not!
    5.Take off:
    calipier
    disk
    track rod end (undo balljoint)
    Hub (undo bottom wishbone balljoint)
    Remove driveshaft from hub
6.Fit shock into hub and then try and put everything back as your found it with the exception of the metal plate that protects the hub ball joint, doh!
    7. Get someone to put all their weight on the wishbone to get hub back over balljoint.
8.Roadtest Poo and all is fine.
9.Remove roadwheel and recheck all nuts are torqued correctly.
10.Put road wheel back on, job finished

While clearing up tools neighbour asks if the other spring should be done just to be on the safe side. Wonder how I am going to get Torque Wrench back after shoving it up his rear...............

Had a check on the www.talkpoo.com to find that one member had suggested that in his honest opinion that the strut could not be replaced without dropping the subframe

If I ever come across a thread and someone is complaining about changing a spring on a Vectra C and how rubbish they are I will direct them to this thread.

So the lesson learnt is do not ever make friends with your neighbours, nothing good will ever come of it............

Neighbour has asked what i want for doing the job, do you think asking for his "first born child" is excessive or justified in this case?

I feel your pain mate, done one of these before and its a pig of a job! Although nothing compared to the ****roen Picasso i spent 4 hours on last week, i've seen smaller springs on a bus its rediculous how big they are, impossible to do with DIY spring compressors

Brilliantly funny thread, and very good for bringing us back to the point that Vectra's are not all bad for maintenence.
