Question Airbox and optimizing air intake?

Hello forum, it is a long time ago I posted on this forum, but still got the Vectra GTS from 2003 with the z18xe engine. It is totally stock, only a K&N replacement filter and removed pipes in the airbox (and an empty end silencer).
Today I cleaned the airfilter and and I saw that the airbox has 6 very small holes, 4 in the bottom part of the box and 2 from the removed pipe which connected the airintake. Now I wonder whether these 4 small holes do have a function (less pressure in the airbox? giving more air when airintake can not supply enough?) .... They are not drilled by the former owner, the box is totally stock as delivered from the factory.
An other question what raised to me is the optimalization of the airintake. This airintake from the trumpet at the grille to the airbox inlet is almost a meter long, counting 3 bends. I think, but correct me if I am wrong, that a shorter intake is more efficient. Does anyone know if an intake from the 2.2 or a turbo or a dieselengine is shorter and wider than the one of a z18xe? Or can I put an almost straight pipe to the airbox and connect a duct thing (do I say that right, a sort of trumpet for collecting air)?

Thanks for reply and kind regards,

The shorter intake will not make a difference except that it may prevent the air from being heated by the top of the radiator and air conditioning condensor. The holes in the bottom of the air box are for water to drain from, in case rain gets in via the intake.

Thanks alot for this reaction, I was a bit confused seeing those little holes in the airbox. Could those suck in warm air? But probably those are too small for that .....
A shorter intake does not have any effect, I conclude from your post? I do not know why Opel created it like this (I suppose silencing inletsound?) but is there any shorter Opel Vectra intake which can be connected to my airbox (diameter 70mm)?

Yes there is a shorter air intake you can put on, from the 2.0T are much shorter.

The holes in the bottom probably do suck in some warm air, but far more air comes in via the intake, so the effect is minimal, and the benefit (letting water drain out) outweighs the disadvantage of the holes.
