If its on retention then there is no fee for putting it on the car, take the documents to your local dvla office, along with your old tax disc, and car documents. They will have forms inside that you will need to fill in and hand to one of the people behind the counter who will sort the rest out, sometimes you get it all on the day and can put the plates on the car there and then but sometimes it can take a week or so for the new tax disc and new car for to come through

if its on retention, then you need to take it into your local dvla office.
they will charge you £25 for a nominee fee - to change the name on the certificate from the previous owner to your name

If its not on retention(should be if the seller has offered it out) then you will have a few to pay to put it on the car (off the top of my head I think my last one was around £100)

In reference to above who said take your tax disc, you only need the serial number, which is requested on the form anyway. If you take the actual disc you are risking getting done for not displaying a tax disc in the time you are in the office. Have never taken my tax disc yet

when i put a personalised plate on last year, i took with me all the relevant documentation that everybody above have mentioned ie: v5, mot certificate, insurance etc. however i left the tax disc on display in the car.

dvla then issued me a receipt for v5 issued a new mot certificate and tax disc there and then! , i was then informed that once i returned home i could put new plates on (if you have had them made already).
once new plates are on you then change tax disc to new one and dispose of old one (it is cancelled by dvla when a new one is issued anyway)

last of all before driving with new plates on you must ring your insurance company and tell them new reg otherwise you will not be insured
