1405 is an EGR fault. Maybe needs a good cleaning or replacing. Im assuming then your car is a 2002 or 2003?

Carburetor cleaner and elbow grease is your best bet.

Heres one on a Dti, not same engine but may help. There isnt a how2 one for the 1.8, so maybe you do one.

Hi guys took the egr valve off today and cleaned it as best i could i may say its nothing like the dti one in the how2 though.
where the dti one has almost a 90 degree part the one on the 1.8 doesnt.
Anyway i took it cleaned and sprayed wherever looked like carbon, then i removed the lower section where the egr valve sits on now thats like a 90 degree bend with 2 straight through holes which had a load of carbon in so i cleaned them out with brake cleaner wire wool and rags.then fitted back to car.
will be going out in it later so see if any different.

been out in the car guys and no light came on after a 20 mile round trip.then got home and had to nip back out to shop and the light came on,got home and plugged it in and fault code p0170 came up.
so ive lost the p1405 fault but the p0170 has come back.
the car is running fine though performance side etc,it did have a very little short of mis-fire/judder once when i was driving but thats it?

    Have a look here http://engine-codes.com/p0170.html

I have found on the early 1.8's the MAF causes a lot of issues, if you do replace it then make sure you get a genuine one and not a cheap ebay one.
Also is your car heating up correctly, does it get to temp and stay there or does it go up and down, thermostat seems to go on these engines as well

MAF is still my where my money would be, do you know anyone with the same engine so you can swap the maf over to try it
