Try the airbox mod with a k and n filter in it. Airbox mod is, lift the top of it off take out the air filter and you see a piece of plastic shaped like half a trumpet. Put your fingers under it and pull upwards. This allows more surface area to be used over the filter then replace with the k and n. I felt it a bit more responsive when I did this to my 1.8 vvti.

ps there are of course other makes of filters

The cone filter will sap the power. sound nice, but no power increase. She will be far better with a the K&N Panel Filter in the Airbox. The VVT runs hot, and it' not at all unusual to see collant temp hit 107Degress in the test mode screen.
There is always the superchips upgrade.. and then the Turbo mod if you are feeling adventurous.
I'm eyeing up the centrifugal superchargers, nice power output and easy enough to fit by the looks of it.

Defo go with the panel mate,I had the cone filter on mine for a week. Sounded nice but no increase and in any case all it does is suck in hot air from under the bonnet. You could also get a remap that would cost about £295ish. No great increase but will make it a bit more responsive.

Would be interested in finding out about the turbo thingy though

I've got a K&N filter, plus did the airbox mod, plus I have taken off the piece of plastic outside the airbox that guides fresh air into the airbox, so the airbox is open to the air under the bonnet.
The air intake from the grill still dumps fresh air near the inlet to the airbox, but no longer directly into the Airbox, so hopefully the engine can breath a bit easier.
It has helped a bit, mostly at low revs, but not greatly increased the power available.
