Default Coolant light and subtle loss

Hi all, thank u for taking the time to view my first post. I have recently bought my first vectra c, a 2004 2.0 dti active, done 175k but full service. On bringing it home the low coolant level light came on, topped it up, didn't drive for a few days until I got tax sorted, next time I drove it coolant light came on again, had lost about an inch out of expansion bottle. The coolant inside the bottle is a murky brown colour with a film of crud on top, also when under load earlier the temp gauge went up from 80 to 90 then back to 90. Have it booked into garage next week but wondered if anyone could point me in the right direction please? I'm thinking head gasket but also possible heater matrix or oil cooler? No obvious signs of leakage either.
    Thank u for ur time

Get a pressue test done, I would suspect a head gasket failing.

No Mayo under cap nor smoke that's what made me wonder to be honest. I'm having some sort of chemical test done on it? What's worst case scenario please, £ wise as I've only just bought it, not sure whether to cut my losses or not?
    Cheers

Would be worth draining, flushing, and refilling the cooling system. Also flush the radiator.

Failing that, it's the head gasket

Thank you for your time. Will the chemical test thing highlight the problem if it is head gasket? Sorry for all the questions, not particularly useful with spanners I'm afraid.

Also forgot to add that the bottle seems under pressure from cold? Not good I think?

The chemical test lets you know if there's oil or fuel in the cooling system , as stated above a good flush is the best start

If there is fuel or oil in the water then it's 99% that the head gasket is gone

Hi, thanks again, just been out to the car, I seem have a small collection of water on top of the gearbox just under the bottle in some small pockets that are on the casing? It's warm too. Sorry for all the advice required. Thank you to all that have replied so far.

Check for a split in the tank or a duff pressure cap. Although if it is constantly under pressure, still think you need the head gasket looking at?
