Dual Mass Flywheel, it helps to dampen down the vibrations on modern diesel engines.

You get vibrations at low revs, car can be difficult to start, normal clutch problems, hard to change gear etc

About £7-800 as you also need to change the clutch etc

Dual mass flywheel, sits between the clutch and flywheel to help transition the torque of a diesel engine

When your sitting on idle and it feels like its slightly misfiring but it's not it's your dmf unbalanced slightly and wearing out

Was told its about a grand to do at a garage

Had to do mine not long after getting mine £800 for DMF clutch and master cylinder replacement. Symptoms were clutch pedal went to the floor and would not come back up, rattling nous from the engine at tickover and heavy vibrations felt through the clutch pedal.

Put another way to answer your question

It's a whole pile of stinking poo trouble that some bright spark invented, that costs us all a fortune in the end !!!

You get DMF issues on almost every make and model depending on how the car is driven, you can "feel" it at work if you make a particularly harsh gearchange or if you leave it a bit too late before dumping the clutch when you stop it gets all soft and wooly feeling you also know you have one when it goes wrong!

Most modern diesels have DMF's so you probably would have had similar problems with a Peugeot, a Mazda, a Ford etc
