Default What can I do to improve my mpg?

Right, I've got a 52 plate 1.8 LS petrol, and driving like a sterile nun I get just over 50 mpg (mostly motorway, 72 miles a day) and that's as good as I can get.

Is there anything I can do to my Veccy to improve the mpg?

    I've always used 5w30 Dexos 2 oil (105k, doesn't burn a drop), would a 0w oil make a difference?

Oil filer, air filter, spark plugs, etc, has anyone noticed a particular brand making a difference?

Lowering the suspension () better aerodynamics?

...I know these could only be minor improvements, but it's due a service/tinkering so now's a good time to ask...

50mpg from a 1.8 an you want more, lol. TBH ive never seen anyone get 50mpg from a 1.8, a lot of the 1.9cdti guys dont even get near that, 45 is the best average I have ever seen from my 1.8 on the BC, so tbh I think your on plums. I take it your are checking the MPG the old fashioned way and not going by the BC? Whats your tyre pressures? I suppose you could run 45psi and that would cut your rolling resistance a bit.

the only thing I can think of is inflate your tyres to the 'eco' pressure. this might not be in your manual as this was introduced in the later manuals.

think it just reduces rolling resistance but should be a help.

what speed do you do on the m/way??? as that is very good for a petrol !!!!

Das- if a diesel isn't getting 50+mpg on that kinda journey then there is a major issue.

    50mpg in a 1.8 sounds impressive though.......

is there a remap for the 1.8 ????

If you are trying to squeeze every last possible mile out of a gallon of petrol, as silly as this sounds, but after i had fully detailed my car - Clay, polish etc i got an extra 2mpg from my 2L Turbo.

I jest you not, at first i thought i was just being paranoid about it being so clean and sparkly, but over the next couple of months it went back to normal mpg. Clayed and polished it again and up went the mpg again!!

I reckon the o'le girl just like the loving touch and decided to "put out" a bit more for me.

I still give her a good wash and polish, but i am now on LPG which makes a huge difference to the cost of running.

Just watch some posts, some people not getting 45mpg from the 1.9. I car share with a guy from work who has a 1.9cdti 08 plate Astra, his BC is sitting at 39mpg last time I was in it, tbh I actually thought it was going to be a 1.8vvt until I got out and checked the badge on the back.

You can get a remap for the 1.8, its about £300 and gives around 8bhp extra, would be interesting to see if it improved mpg too.

Well, thanks for the comments all! ...keep 'em comming...

I'm doing 56 ‘ish mph (happy to let it drop going up hills and rise going down), and NOT using cruise control.

Keeping a long and boring story short, I've always driven everywhere as fast as I could, a couple of near misses with speed cameras and I started driving at 70mph using cruise. I then got about 42mpg, unheard of for me, so I tried slower and slower down to 56mph, then stopped using cruise control and with a bit of slip streaming and gentle throttle use I manage 50mpg.

...and I worked out that it only adds 11 minutes a day to my commuting time (50 of the 72 mile a day I do have a speed limit of more than 50 mph) and will save me £400 a year in petrol.

    Who needs a diesel eh.

Thats very impressive for a 1.8 petrol. And you want more i say.

That has to be the highest mpg i've heard for a petrol car. Well done though..
