Default Wide ratio g/box in an Sri ?

Would it be advisable to fit a F17w394 to a 2006 1.8 Sri,and is it a huge difference in performance . The driver (my dad) never thrashed the old box so at a guess I think he won,t notice the difference .
    Thanks.

With the wide ratio gearbox you'll find that you can do 60mph at 2000rpm in 5th gear, and in fact rarely need to go over 2500rpm ever in normal driving.

Which is why it's fitted to the non-sporty Vectras like the LS, Club, Elegance and Elite.

I've got the ratios somewhere so I could work out the different speed/rpm ratios if you like.

I went the other way in my old vec, putting a close ratio box in. The difference was night and day.

    Vehicle : Golf 7

    Trim : GTD

    Engine : 2.0 TDI 184PS

    Year : 2014

    Mileage : 40000

Engine may start to struggle with that box in higher gears.

Ok - here are a few rpm/speed figures based on the gear ratios.

This is for my 2004 1.8 Dual Fuel Elegance, so F17W gearbox with 215/55R16 tyres. Don't forget that air resistance means that speeds above 70mph will be less. Top speed is actually around 120mph.

    Speeds at 2000rpm, 4000rpm and 6000rpm
    1st gear: 12mph, 25mph, 37mph
    2nd gear: 23mph, 47mph, 70mph
    3rd gear: 35mph, 69mph, 104mph
    4th gear: 48mph, 97mph, 145mph
    5th gear: 61mph, 121mph, 182mph

With the F17C close ratio gearbox (eg in an SRI) and the same tyres:

    Speeds at 2000rpm, 4000rpm and 6000rpm
    1st gear: 12mph, 25mph, 37mph
    2nd gear: 21mph, 43mph, 64mph
    3rd gear: 32mph, 65mph, 97mph
    4th gear: 41mph, 82mph, 122mph
    5th gear: 51mph, 103mph, 154mph

Hence what you'll notice is that you'll be going slightly faster in gear than you were before for the same rpm, at the expense of acceleration. So you'll use less fuel as a result.

A12532F17W394 means it was made at the Aspern factory, on afternoon of May 5th 2003. It's a 5-speed wide ratio gearbox.

So probably not off a facelift SRI at all...

That'll be Aspern factory, January 24th 2006 afternoon if I understand the codes correctly. Wide ratio too.
