Go and test drive a few different spec cars. Diesels more mpg, but appear to be slighlty less reliable, petrol less mpg but appear to be more reliable.

I have a 1.8VVTi and like it a lot, others will vote for their own cars.

So, go and try before you buy.

I've always been a petrol fan,but recently got a V6 diesel after a 3ltr lexus and the diesel is as if not quicker than the Lexus, and it's doing mid thirties even with me driving !!

This is undoubtedly true, however, I do honestly believe that the 2.0T petrol is the best overall compromise for power, performance, fun to drive, reliability and fuel economy.

No it won't do the same mpg as a diesel, but it will do 38-40mpg on a motorway cruise if you're light footed. Blat the fun pedal and it's a fun car to drive and can even be a bit of a monster if you tune it whilst still keeping that overall reliability and economical driving if you need it. It doesn't have an EGR so that worry's out the window, it's chain driven so no belt to worry about, no swirl flaps falling off or third injector wiring failing and god knows what else that goes wrong with the others regularly mainly because the engine was designed and built by Saab for the American market. There are of course things that do go wrong with this engine (coil packs, boost sensors etc), but the engine itself is bulletproof pretty much.

Of course all the above is a personal opinion and is no doubt biased, at the end of the day you have to make your own choice what you want and as others have said, if you're not sure then go test drive a few.

I test drive a few, diesel and petrol and settled on the 2.8T! Fuel economy is crap but it costs me £30 per month more to run than a Ford Puma that I had for a while and that has got to be worth the money!

Just tickle the fun pedal and you will understand why I bought mine!

I reckon the 2.0t is a good choice if you're doing thess than 12k a year or hardly any motorway. The cabbies seem to like them as the mpg is as good as the derv around the houses- won't get close to the 60 a diesel can get on a long cruise though.....

It's all about balancing the scales really...
