    Default Aircon

I've only had my 2008 Vec for 3 weeks now and I find out today (the hottest day this year so far!) that the aircon isn't working. The light comes on but the air temp is no different at all. With the engine idling switching the aircon on and off makes no difference to the engine idle speed and I can't hear it 'engaging' like I would expect.

Does this sound like something major, or would a lack of gas make the system fail to engage as well? I've checked the fuses and everything seems OK.

I've got a warranty on this but whether it would cover replacement aircon systems I don't know

Sounds like it needs re-gassing, mine is the same, previous owner probably never used it and the seals dry out.

Been told Kwick-Fit is as good as anywhere to have it regassed.

Once it's working again, use it regularly.

AC is for all year use, not just for hot days.

It also makes for an excellent demister when used in conjunction with the heater.

I used to use it regularly on my old vec to keep it healthy but I've only had this one a few weeks.

Would a lack of gas stop the aircon engaging as I cant hear it come on like in my old vec, sort of a click and a dip in engine revs?

It won't come on if there is low pressure in the system

I take it a private sale so you can't claim on any warranty?

Its got a warranty but regassing probably isn't covered. I'm guessing its more than just a regas as its only 4 years old so why would it need regassing unless it had a leak. Either that or theres another fault somewhere.

Garage has agreed to have a look though and see whats up - I guess a regass is the first thing they'd do anyway.

I never knew it it didn't engage if there was low pressure - I just thought it would give warm air instead!

Warranty will cover it if there is a leak.

But as you said, if it just needs topping up, then you'll be charged.

Trouble is, they'll initially charge you, and then refund later if proved to be a leak, unless the leak is obvious when they try to top up.

Might be worth your while popping into kwik fit. If there is a leak then they won't charge you, and then you can claim on the warranty, BUT don't tell them you've already had someone try and top it up, else they might lay blame on kwik fit.

I've spoken to the garage again and they said if it just needs topping up they'll do it as a goodwill gesture as I've only had the car a few weeks.

Sounds good - hope thats all thats wrong with it!

If all goes well I'll post some complimentary comments about the garage!
