Not sure that I agree with some of this information.
On any diesel car, it is ilegal for the exhaust not to point down toward the ground, UNLESS it has a DPF fitted and therefore no black smoke (in theory) can be omitted. The current MOT test checks the opacity of the smoke in a light meter, so if the EGR or DPF of both have been removed, then you run the risk of a higher level of soot (black smoke) being visible.
Best option is to get the car cracking hot and ensure that the exhaust has been purged of any soot prior to presenting the car at the MOT Stn.
We have seen town driven cars with blocked DPF's that people have drilled holes through the DPF to allow it to vent excess pressure, but as the cars are still town driven, the soot problem does not go away.
