    Default CDTi 150 Running Temperature

    Just a quick one

My car (Facelift 1.9 CDTi 150 SRi) has been running at 86-88 degrees when fully warmed up. In traffic it would rise to 90 and the fan would start up and bring it back to 86. Great, but todays hot weather, the temp guage ran up to 92 normal driving. I expected this with the outside temperature being 23 degrees. I then flipped the CD30 into test mode, and was shocked to see the temperature readout on there at 97 degrees . It went up to 98 (but guage only showed 92) and the fans kicked in and cooled it.

It seems as if the temp guage and CD70 are the same up until 86 degrees, then the guage rises slower than the CD70. Ie, the guage and the CD70 are on 86, then when the guage is on 92, the CD70 shows 98 degrees (when the fan takes over).

The thermostat was changed last year, and flushed the entire cooling system with a hosepipe until it ran clear, and refilled with fresh coolant. I've no coolant loss, no funny smells etc, and it always cools.

I have heard there can be differences between the two readings, but to this extent? And should I worry?

    Anyone else had this?

    Thanks

As the test mode is technicalyl hidden I wouldn't read too much into it but get it checked out anyway. If you didn't know about the test mode you would have been none the wiser regarding this discrepancy.

That's what I thought. The thermostat is open at 86 (both hoses warm and coolant seen to be circulating back to tank).

Have heard about the guage showing lower than the actual temp on some Vectras as some owners were thinking their cars were overheating? Sure I saw a thread on here a while back but can't find it now.

Glad I don't have standard stereo tbh. I found it only reaches 92C on the guage when stopped in heavy traffic. Driving, the guage shouldn't really get to 92.

It did drop from 92 on the guage to just under 90 whilst still driving. Was only on 92 for a few seconds. I'm assuming the fan kicked in while driving.

    Must replace the head unit

Hold the SETTINGS or MAIN button on your stereo for about 10 seconds you'll hear it beep. Use same button or the BC button to cycle through the screens.

With the radio on and engine running, hold the SETTINGS button down for about 10 seconds. You will hear a quiet beep. Release the button, then press the BC button to cycle through the hidden screens

Also, there's no excess pressure in the system (hoses soft, and removed cap withoug getting scalded!), so rules out CHG problems. No mayo in oil too, and coolant is clear (red) too.

Job for Tuesday (day off)..... Give the cooling system a flush

Having said that, the thermostat I put in last year was a cheapie eBay one. May not be opening fully

Possibly not, I think the temperature really needs to exceed 100C to cause any severe damage - that's my guess.
