Sods law and a fault code

I let my brother borrow my car for a long trip. It's come back with the engine light on.. to be fair the MPG count is up and he drives like a girl - so I think it's just luck.

I've done my own version of a pedal test and the ODO screen showed:

004 05

Would I be right in linking that to this code:
P0405 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Sensor A Circuit Low

Just an update / further advice wanted.

Removed and cleaned a hideously dirty EGR valve, came up well, also did the boost sensor while I was at it, which was equally caked.

EML light still present. Do we think that means I have attended to the wrong bit, or that the EGR is kaput? I haven't given it a run since - apart from round the block, but it'll do 300 miles by the end of the week.

(Also while I was at it took the airbox waste piece out and cranked up the tuning box - ooee, it still moves)
