confused What's the difference between a cheap re-map and an expensive one?

As above, I've been looking at re-maps for my 1.9 150 and can't decide who to go with (it's like choosing tyres)

Obviously the done thing is to get the egr deleted from the map and I want to get as close to 190 brake as possible.

I've seen remaps that range from about £150 all the way up to the EDS ones for about 500....whats the difference between them? My current favourite is the MAS performance map for circa £230 iirc but the only downside (or upside ) is the drive to Yorkshire for it.

Does anyone know of any companies in the east of scotland that will re-map my car? Most importantly it has to be a decent remap...I don't want the car to run lumpy and have problems, also I want the car to have some decent pulling power for my caravan so if the bhp has to suffer for torque then so be it

I can only recommend MAS Performance as that's what's on my car mate - hasn't put a foot wrong in over 10,000 miles. I posted the other day about the economy I was getting too. Ben will come to you if you want for a bit of extra cash, but you won't get the rolling road before and after obviously...

For the cost of him driving to me i'd be just as well to fill up my tank and go to him bud.....am I right about the price, is it 230? And that includes a r/r before and after?

Give or take that's what I paid for mine mate. I got my own blanking plate off ebay for 2 quid beforehand and he mapped it out at the same time as giving me 184bhp and 295lbs/ft. Plenty on here have been to him and I don't know of anyone who's had problems - he works on smaller prifits and word of mouth instead of being a large company with huge overheads.

MPG wanted to charge me 40 quid for the EGR blanking plate...

power tune are just off the shelf maps and not a custom

i had a van in thier for a map
    no dyno or that
joe just copies the ecu parameters on his controller
takes to his computer for new parameters from the net or something
    then reflashes your ecu.
£300 at the time for 20 mins all in
and he doesnt want to give you any info

you can do the same yourself if you trust a map from a public domain site

not a custom tune so only works a bit on non modded turbos imo

not anywhere near a custom map where a tuner will take all your mods into account and take it near the limits of timing advance / boost / detonation
be able to see whats happening at all sensors etc
then back it off a tad for a wee bit of safety
checking air/fuel ratio / knock / power either on road dyno software or on the rollers.

off the shelf maps are just a generic reflash and not worth it imo

ive done both and the custom mapping going on the power runs is awsome feeling the extra power stage by stage

Cheers for the info mate. TBH I can't see the point in driving to Motherwell, spending 300 quid and not getting a r/r printout or anything. The extra 70 quid would cover diesel to get to Keighley too
