    Default Shell

Ok, tonight I had to dive in a Shell station for some Vecodka, 10 mils range ain't cat friendly, but it happens, generally I use the local ESSO, which is located in a Tesco mini store site, well budgeriegard me! pickup in a laboured 2nd gear became more responsive, the car sounded quieter and more up for it.

I'm sure I remember Duncan posting something a while back along the same lines....put standard fuel in one time, and the car flew!

Anybody shed any light on the situation?

It's just the bog standard Shell low sulpher derv I put in, but I did notice a noticable improvement in low end pull and general smoothness, only really noticed it as I'd been driving quite a few hrs on the ESSO stuff, but when I came out after refuelling the car felt noticeably better.

<Duncan sits here racking his brains wondering what Paul is referring to>

The only thing I can think of (that's in any way related) is that I tried Optimax in a couple of tanks and thought it was rubbish - car felt worse than the SUL I normally use.

let me have a think and a search, D, it was probably nothing consequential, just an offhand comment that stuck in my mind.

    I may be some time..

lol - no worries Paul. I'm as curious as you are to see what it was. It may have been something I've completely forgotten about.

A thousand apologies, Duncan, here's the post I remembered.....

Been running with high octane fuels for a good while now, since the end of last year nothing less than 97RON has gone in. Ran fine, thought i'd detected improvement at the time, then had the remap done and assumed that it would have been adjusted particularly to run on higher octane stuff. All has been fine, no problems whatsoever.

Couple of days ago, I got caught short on fuel, got as far as the light actually flashing. Only garage I could find at the time didn't have any premium fuel (Morrisons) so ended up having to half fill the tank with standard 95RON fuel.

After about 60 miles or so, the car started feeling more responsive and torquey. I'm about 150 miles into that fuel now and the car is a different beast. Have to be quite gentle with the throttle FFS!!!

Nothing else has been touched on the car recently, so the fuel is the only variable that could have made the difference.

I'm guessing that the remap was done without factoring in high octane fuel so it wasn't having the full effect of the map due to timing or other perameters?
Guess I got my idols mixed up..............
