    Default What should I service

    Hey all.

Been searching for a clear answer on this one for a while with various answers being found all conflicking as always lol...

My 2004 1.8 is nearing the 90k line. She had her timing belt changed 2 years ago at 63k. The oil and filter was changed last year as part of a service in June ahead of the MOT. I paid a garage to do the work as I was not confident enough to do it myself.

    Anyway...

I have since put myself through a basic course and am feeling confident about servicing the car for the most part. I was planning on doing some work on it to get her running great (although that said, she is running great anyway at present).

Oil and filter change is fine, pollen folter and air filter is also dead easy to do... I can all the checks on breaks etc (check a few months ago and all were great onthe car with loads of life left in them)...

So what else should I be considering / checking / replacing as part of a service?

I am thining spark plugs but am not sure when these need to be done (never been changed while I have had the car) and should i pre-empt a coil pack failure and change this also now? What about the battery (original unit still on the car)... should I consider swapping it out given it's 8+ years old?

the fuel filter was somethign else I had wondered about but I don't know if this is a basic task or if it takes quite allot of skill. The Haynes manaul on it looks rather complicated...!

Anything else you guys can recomend changing?

I am not good technically but from a driver's point of view I would think yes to an 8 year old battery and the fuel filter. If you have not got the service book I would also thjink about the brake fluid, due every 2 years. Sorry I could not be of more help.

    If you're doing :
Oil, oil filter, pollen filter, air filter, fuel filter

    That just leaves the checks
Make a list of those you can do, such as lights, controls, etc., then give a list to the local garage for those you cannot do
Alternatively, ask a MoT station to perform a test without certificate (report only), that's what I used to do with my second car (£20 was cheaper than £50 for what my local garage wanted)
This then covered the steering, suspension, exhaust, mountings, etc

    Personal golden rule with service
If it ain't broke, don't fix

If the spark plugs are due (or overdue) then replace them as well
I used to have mine replaced every 40K miles (on my Vectra B) as the service plan was ABACABAD (C was 40K)
As for the coil pack, don't bother unless there is an issue

How do you change break fluid? Do you have to blead the full system to flush it out...?

Don't know but vx service manual recommends every 2 years. Am sure other guys will be able to advise or there may be a How 2 on here.

Flush and change the coolant should be on your list if its never been done, easy job. Spark plugs are easy too. Think they are 40k, but that's just ridiculas considering a set will cost you £12, yearly or 20K a much better bet imo. I wouldn't bother with a coil pack as a Vx one is about £150 and an after market one may be of less better quality. Id leave bleeding the brakes to a garage tbh, bleed nipples can get rounded/broken off, a garage will have a better idea what they are facing with the car on a ramp. Fuel filter can be tricky too, if you break the clips you could be left high and dry. Buy a VX one and just let the garage know your supplying one. I replaced my battery a couple of months after buying mine as it was the original and 6 years old and know how finicky they can be when a cold snap kicks in. Bought a bigger one to be on the safer side too.

faults since ive had it are all common on this forum

    arb bushes
    rad mounts
    thermostat replaced at 53000 miles
    wiper linkage broke
resistor pack due to leak in scuttle tray
    camshaft sensor
i always change the cambelt at 40000 miles
waterpump started leaking so replaced cambelt tensioners and rollers and waterpump

i wouldnt mess with the coil pack ive got the same car as you and dasarab
