I'd be tempted to say a new coil pack and spark plugs but to be sure you need to code read it, when was it last serviced? And did the definatly change the plugs?

Only had it a couple months, doesn't look like the garaged changed plugs during its so called presale service!!! ,have done some checking and suspect the coil pack as well just checking if there were any other common failures causing similar problem

I had exactly the same symptoms in my 1.8 vvt. Change the coil pack, whilst that is off you may as well do the spark plugs too, really easy jobs and makes the engine rev freely again.....

When I got mine, they said it had been srviced, then said that was only an oil change.

Check plugs and air filter. Do you know anyone nearby with a VVT and try their coil pack before you buy one?

Always always always change the plugs, garages rip us of charge us and don't change them resulting in plugs which are a couple of years old at least, when spark plugs get old they build up a high resistance, the coil pack has to compensate for this which it can't do for very long, they should be changed yearly without fail, if you take a plug out you will see the porcelain at the bottom will be all golden where the plug has burnt, not good
