    Default 2.2dti non start

    Hi all.

Can anyone give me any pointers on what to look for, i have a 52 plate 2.2dti Sri which has just took me an hour to get started! I have read the various problems which relate to leak off pipes and injector seals etc... I think my first job to do is replace the glow plugs tho? I eventually got it started by connecting the jump leads to my dads car and turning the engine over and over untill it finally albeit reluctantly churned into life but when it did it kicked a load of smoke out the exhaust

    any help much appreciated!

    Thanks
    Andy

Hi there, I only bought it three weeks ago and the garage said it had had a full service, I looked at the leak off pipes today and could see the first one was covered in what looked like oil? the "t" pieces were white in colour and all intact so not sure if these are the new type?

thanks for the tip about not turning it over for a long time!

If it's turning over for that long, it won't be a glow plug issue. My old 2.2DTi would start first time with the glow plugs disconnected, minus 10 degrees outside, and only turn over for 5 seconds before firing up.

    Change the leak-off pipes

Sounds like a fuelling issue, like diesel flowing back to the tank.

How long had the car stood for? Was it facing uphill? And has it previously started up ok?

I would put a large amount of money of the return pipes being perished. Start with replacing them. It will probably need a tow start after replacement. I could never get mine to start cold just on the starter motor after pipe replacement.
It is a cheap repair you can buy the tubing at a motor factors and cut new pieces to previous length sections one at a time.

Hi, Many thanks for the reply. It was stood for a day only and slightly uphill and has started no problem before this but after being run the day before. will give the pipes a try. is there any special way of fitting new? lookes like they dissapear under the cam cover?

Take the cover off and use snipe or long nose pliers and 'tease' the pipes off only pull on the rubber pipe perhaps a bit of heat with a hot air gun relaxes the pipes. Be careful not to break off the pipe inserts into the head. Simply cut a new section to length and refit. I used to do it one or two sections at a time then the next section etc. to avoid me forgetting how the pipes reconnected. (short attention span!) I had to carry out this repair 3 times during the 130K i put on my 2.2dti

sorry to sound like a noob but when you say tow start can you expand? do you mean like a bump start by lifting the clutch when moving?

I had to get somebody to tow the vectra.
Put it in 3rd or 4th clutch down get some body to tow you at about 20mph drop clutch and let engine spin until it catches (starts) then get the clutch down and signal flash lights that its has started and they can stop.........do not crash into the back of the tow vehicle you need to stop as well!!
For some reason the 2.2dti just did not seem to be able to prime the system on the starter motor hence it needed the tow. Once primed it will be fine. My 1.9cdti seems different changed the fuel filter body last week spun it over on starter and 'bobs your uncle' it started.
