Default Hybrid turbo here we come!

Some here may recall that my turbo went last summer and thanks to Lee (Merikito), I put a second-hand turbo in her to 'tide her over'.

Well now I've finally got some time on my hands, I've sent my turbo off to AET Engineering to get turned into a hybrid. I've also ordered a Scorpion pre-cat pipe to go in at the same time, so the hope is that there will be a noticeable difference once all is said and done.

Once I get the turbo back, I may even do a How-to on doing the job of replacing it.

Yup, but I do my own. The two 59mm hybrids were probably less than yours on its own

That's nice. I'm not being funny mate, but given how much time I get to work on the car these days that's the only option available to me.

To be honest, I'm far more interested in the story of your road to hybrid; trials, tribulations and glorys and all that good stuff.

Well the weak points on the engine are the clutch (375lbft is about your limit on a standard one before you risk it slipping) and the head. A big hybrid my be capable of running upto 40psi but as I have seen, along with the water/methanol, which increases pressure even further in the cylinder, the head gives up long before the pistons. Without the water the temps would have been to high and would have melted the pistons though. I expect they will make you up a 52mm compressor and I would suggest a limit of 27psi on the remap. If the larger injectors I have fitted work out, they weigh in at £250 and took ten minutes to fit once the injectors were out. I'll let people know how all the bits work out once it is working again (end of the week fingers crossed). The EDS maps are no good for heavily modified Vectras, they do not make good figures. RS Tuning seem to have the best results but you need a big chunk of money for that. If you do not have an uprated clutch already, best start saving for one as my car was pushing 395lbft on the rollers with a 52mm hybrid and slipping the clutch on the road.

Holy c**p, 395lbft with a 52mm hybrid! You're right, that's what I'm getting a 52mm. Surely you did a lot more to warrant that figure though??

I'm very happy with the EDS remap though and I'm not after ultimate figures, I just want it to be fast and reliable. Not sure how much boost it supplies on this map, but I'm sure it's quite high - hence my standard turbo died. I get your point about the clutch, I'll start saving...

What map are you running? The standard EDS 200bhp map does not raise boost and tends to give 185bhp/290-300lbft. The Stage three map they wrote for me, only ran about 200bhp and 330lbft without the water/methanol. The stage one map with a tuning box is much better as they do not increase the fuel pressure enough to get good results.

    edit:

Just looked at your thread on your map, I'd like to have seen road wheel figures as you should be running AT LEAST 175WHP to hit those figures so low down and as you can see, the power peak is very low because the torque drops off so soon. All of EDS's maps are like that and it makes them feel alot quicker than they are. Mine peaks power up near 5000rpm and that makes a massive difference. With your hybrid on the map you have now, you will see little if any difference I expect. You would need the boost raised and fuel pressure at top end increased to get the fuel in the optimum possition in the cylinder for the rpm with the higher boost.
