    Default engine light on.

    hi guys.

had the car 2 weeks now and already have problems .

engine light came on this afternoon, its the one thats shows the pic of the engine. i read the manual and it says its an exhaust emmissions light and goes on about the dpf but as far as i know the manual vectra c hatch doesn't have a dpf.

the other thing is the car is still driving with no problems at all, still goes like stink and no issues other than the light being on.

is the light for the exhaust emmissions or is it for other things as well ? .

also resently clean and checked egr, trottle body and boost sensor. using the how 2s which i've used on my last 3 vectra cdti's.

if anybody has any ideas, they would be greatfully received.

    cheers

That's the engine management light and needs to be plugged in to a scanner to read the fault codes

Engine management light is the car/spanner light.

The OP is correct in identifying it as the emmisions fault light.

so if its defo for the emmissions light, am i right in thinking that the manual cdti hatch doesn't have a dpf.

if there is no dpf, is it likely that its the egr thats at fault ?.

just trying to get an idea on the price of the fix.

If it was the egr valve you would expect to have lack of power and excessive smoke from the exhaust, it could mean anything and needs plugging into a scanner if it's still driving ok it's probally nothing major usually airflow meter or lambda sensor

Car and spanner light means a couple of things, on diesels it could be water in the fuel filter, immobiliser light but also electrical malfunction light, the engine light means one thing but described as many things - anti pollution light, emission control light, check engine light and engine management light. This light is a universal light used by all manufactures whereas the car and spanner light is Vauxhall own

The OP hasn't mentioned that the car/spanner light is on though.

The fault light he mentions is the emissions light.

Emissions Fault light:- (pic of engine)

    To quote from the handbook
Illuminates when the ignition is switched on and during the start attempt. Extinguishes shortly after the engine starts running. Illuminated with the engine running indicates a fault in the exhaust gas cleaning system. The permitted emissions may be exceeded.
    Contact a workshop immediately.

Flashing with the engine running indicates a fault which could lead to catalytic converter damage. You may continue driving without damage if you back off until flashing stops and the control indicator illuminates.
    Contact a workshop immediately.

    --------------------------------------------

And as previously stated, the car/spanner light is among other things, the engine electronics fault light..

    Car/Spanner Light:-
lluminates for a few seconds after the ignition is switched on.
If it illuminates when the engine is running, there is a fault in engine or transmission electronics. The electronic system switches to an emergency running programme. Fuel consumption may be increased and the driveability of the vehicle may be impaired.

    -------------------------------------------------------------

In older Vauxhalls the engine light (which also used to have a lightning strike symbol inside it) was the engine electronics light. But since the introduction of the car/spanner light as well, the engine symbol light just became the emissions fault light and the car/spanner light took over the electrical fault side of things.

If the car is running ok it could be an old fault that hasn't been cleared - as already said you need to have the fault codes read to see whats what. You could try disconnecting the battery for a couple of hours and then reconnecting which may clear the fault - make sure you have your radio code if needed

    In the Vec-c:
The orange engine symbol is the emmissions fault light
The Car with a spanner is the general fault symbol across all Vec -c that will illuminate when there is a DTC across any part of the car - can also come on in conjunction with the emmissions light (orange engine symbol)

This differs to earlier (vec-b) cars where there was only the orange engine symbole that displayed for any fault.

Get the codes read - but will most prob point to a egr value issue. Worth removing and cleaning .

Im in AShford, Middlesex so not far from Hayes and happy to hook the car up to VauxCom and read the codes for you to see what the issue is.. Let me know.
