    Default Oil & Filter Change

Had my 3.0 Siggy (Z30DT) for around 1500 miles now, and the service indicator has started showing "0". It only had an oil & filter (intermediate service, whatever that means, I guess it is oil & filter) about 2800 miles ago, but didn't reset the service indicator (non-Vx). The garage didn't list what spec oil they used, so I thought I'd do it again to be safe.

Well, first off, the thoughtful designers put a big flap in the giant undertray, so one can remove filter & drain oil without removing the whole tray - great idea; but a chocolate fireguard for those of us who do this lying on our backs in the road, as the flap just looks like the loading ramp on a Hercules
Next, having borrowed saab filter removal tool, found (as a friend did on his Veccy last weekend) that the filter drain plug is SOOOO tight, the whole filter comes off (and home mechanic gains appearance of a hairless Dalmation )
Worse - the filter I took out was the two-section jobby for the Y30DT - I do hope it hasn't compromised the engine............
Still, it was only 2800 miles, and it is running more quietly I feel.
Service Indicator reset to 20k, so let's see how it goes...........

at least now you know its right- though I would do it again in 5k just for peace of mind and to give it another flush as such in case it hadn't been done by the stealer. then she might be fit for 20k but I don't like more than 15k between services as the oil ends up minging in the diesel 'beast' lol
I never understand why people tighten the oil plugs and filter housings so much- it makes no sense!!!!

I was down your way in jan playing darts against dorset (in dorchester) and saw lots of lovely places for car pics :-)

It's not always mechanics over tightening though.

I've done 4 services on my car in the past year.
But the last one I bent my oil filter tool trying to remove the housing.

I think it's due to the housing being metal.

Got the proper Saab tool for this time round so hopefully gets it off easy enough.

The sump drain plug required a ridiculous amount of torque to undo (copper wasker was nearly see-through ) which can't be good for the thread.
The drain plug in the filter housing is still as-was - maybe I'll undo it another time when the mood takes me. At least I had a giant oil catch bowl, purchased to cope with the Kuwait-size sump capacity of the V6

I stripped the thread from filter drain plug when I first bought car aswel :-(

So since getting it repaired I just undo filter itself. Which takes some skill not to get a face full of oil
