    Default The future of MOTs

I wonder if this will happen.

Iím not sure if it is a good or bad idea. Good from a dosh point of view but wonder if it will have an impact on safety (things that would have been picked up in an annual MoT could now be subject to a 2 yearly check).

I know modern cars are more reliable but some jobs involve high annual mileages (thinks 70,000 miles between MOTs )

can't see that happening but then again there would be more fines issued due to more unroad worthy cars being on our roads.

I suppose if you get the car serviced as per the directed intervals it would spot things but its no where near as thorough as an MoT and would not cover those who opt out and do their own servicing.

What the gossip on the new system Mark, I did not know there were problems (I got my new bit of paper from the garage OK, I take it central records are the problem)

It's slow, the link is unreliable and the supplied equipment is pre-historic...

did you know that if they can't find your car's details they can accept up to 3 characters different on the VIN number now... the DVLA records are a mess..

When my wife's car was mot'd, I had to go back to the garage a few days later. They couldn't print the certificate off!

If the MOT goes to two years, I bet the price more than doubles to cover 'administration'.

I am an mot tester and mot quality controller and the new computerised system is good when it is working ok, BUT if it goes down, WOW major headache, you have to do testing in what is called fallback (to much to explain but it's a pain) and if it goes down nationally then they will initiate Emergency testing, and that is the end of the world lol. When it first came in you could enter the vehicles registration number and full VIN and u would get loads of hits ( My record was 97 different vehicles it could have been) and u have to pick the right one cos once you hit confirm vehicle details that's it logged into the system forever. It is sorted now and will bring up the correct vehicle straight away. As for the two yearly test, mixed feelings from me.
