Opinions on purchasing a 1.8 or 2.2 ?

I was just hoping to canvas the opinions of a few people in the know. I am looking a buying another Vectra after putting my own 1.9 cdti up for sale. I've decided on either a 1.8 Sri or a 2.2 Sri. What would be the difference in Tax, if anyone knows, is it minimal as it now goes off Emissions if I'm not mistaken ?

What would be your preference and any other points I should consider. I'm looking at spending about 3k btw !!

1.8,.. had a 2.2 and it's riddled with the fuel pump problem. some on here have been fine but overwhelmingly an issue. I had three on mine, all supposedly on the re-design so a problem I feel not rectified.
plus the 1.8 is only marginly slower and apparently very reliable.

i was looking at the 2.2 but they have issues with the fuel pump as chewy71 said

i've just bought a 1.8, collecting it wednesday. looking at my invoice Road tax is £190 a year, whereas the 1.9 cdti 120 is £165, and i believe the 150 to be £210.

I have a 1.8 SRi 2004. It is my second 1.8 engined prefacelift. The engines seem to be very reliable. The only problem with them is that they are neither a performance engine or particularly frugal. I get about 35mpg out of mine which I understand is about typical. I have an induction filter on it and whilst I think it sounds nice and I like the look of the preface SRi's it certainly isn't a performance car! The advantage of this is that you can get them pretty cheap. I got my 2004 in great condition, full service history with 70k on for just over £2k.

I had a brief spell with a 2.2 and found it underwhelming. I had a 1.8 engine in the Astra Coupe, not sure if it's the same lump as the Vectra, but it was bullet proof and didn't seem to mind being pushed hard.

Going from a 1.9 CDTI to a 1.8 you'll notice a huge loss in grunt! 2.0T is where I'll be going next!!
