Default M.O.T. = Does It Sound Dodgy ?

I had an M.O.T. today at 12.30 pm just behind my house .

    Vectra 2.2 direct petrol Design 2006 ( 56 )

So at 9.30 a.m. , i replaced a couple of bulbs the computer had been telling me about for a while ,

a brake light and a main beam ( or low ) bulb and because my fingers are too big , i needed to take the airbox out and in doing so ,
had a worrying 45 minutes because a torx screw had dropped down near the belts and i could not find it on the ground .
So in the end just put 4 back on the airbox and started the car and bingo , it popped out on the floor , PHEW !!! , no damaged belts from a loose screw .

    ANYWAY BACK TO THE M.O.T.

i went back at 2 p.m. to hear the results .

The new driver side main beam bulb from this morning failed because it was not as bright as my older passenger side bulb ,
I said it was brand new and he said ... " oh , we get that all the time , Halfords put the new bulb in , but in might be incorrectley fitted , we'll try fitting a new one ."

And i failed on emissions , the garage advised changing oil change/filter , fuel filter and add fuel treatment .

SO , i took the fail sheet to my usual mechanic ( different town ) to ask about him doing the work and he raised his eye brows at the filter and fuel treatment fix ( they might do a little ) and also commented that my emission numbers were NOT far off a pass and said politely ( as he couldn't put down a fellow garage ) that it looks like they did the emission tests while the car was cold and it would be better to do it warm .

The first garage wants £ 123 for a new bulb , new air filter , fuel treatment and oil change/filter .

What do you think of this ?

    My view is ,

is that there is no point sending car to another garage to get work done , when the M.O.T. garage could fail it ,

BUT , if i get work done at the M.O.T. garage they are not likely to fail their own repair work and hopefully , i get an M.O.T. Pass .

OHH .... and my present M.O.T. runs out in on Thursday 15 March 2012 .

So i think i should just pay up and get a fresh m.o.t.

But can't help thinking , they've pulled a trick with the emissions almost at the pass mark ( my usual mechanic said , it looks like a cold engine reading , but also could be a picky mechanic , who could have passed it ) .

Also they tried to say my new bulb was incorrectly not as bright as it should be , but came out with excuses when i said it was brand new today .

SORRY FOR LONG POST = I HOPE YOU GET THE GIST OF IT .

My MOT station is a mile and a half from my house, but I drive all the way around the outer ring road of the whole town before going there (10 miles) to make sure the engine is nice and hot for the test. You've got to be cynical and do everything you can to leave as few opportunities for being "taken for a ride" as possible.

i am on a tight schedule to re - m.o.t. before Thursday dead line for last years m.o.t. ,

i would pay another garage another £ 35 pound , but i can't risk another potential rip off or unknown whether the repair works i pay for would definately work , therefore costing me more ££££££'s .

i can just about stomach the £ 123 , to be back on the road , but not happy .

i think it's unlikely that the m.o.t. garage would fail their Own repair work for their Own m.o.t. test ?

    Hmmm .

    Always replace bulbs in pairs.
And go to another garage with a warm car.
And lol@£123 - I could drive to Newcastle with the parts, do that work and still be in pocket.

I`d go back and tell them youve had the work done , but just before you go get the car upto temp and give it a "italian tune" up" I used to drive a omega as a taxi and they allways tried it on with the taxi test by saying theyd do the filters etc while you wait because the emissions were high/on the limit needless to say after my little blast the reading was allways low

if the m.o.t. station's OWN suggested fix work fails to pass their OWN m.ot. ,

    Then , am i entitled to a refund of the work ? ( answer = slim/none = l.o.l. )

Do they have a " Trial and Error until something works " get out of jail card ?

just to let you know that now the car has failed an MOT the expiry date of the old one is null and void, you are driving around in a car with NO valid MOT untill it passes, had a lengthy conversation with an MOT tester about this only yesterday so be carefull....he says some people can be arsy about this

^^^^^^^ No the old one is still valid. Only changes the date if it passes.

Do you have the emission readings?
