    Default Brake Pads.... Again

My warning light has come on for my front brake pads, I assume they are not covered under warranty.

Are they changed as part of the service as my car is only 2000 miles away from it's service I may duck in for an early one

    Cheers

Hiya mate, you may be able to squeak them out of VX if you're on networkQ as they are supposed to be 'garuanteed' for 12 months from date of purchase.. Otherwise they are just classified as a 'wear and tear' item so they won't be warranty covered, and if you send it to VX for a service they won't change them as part of the service.. you will be advised they need changing and asked to pay extra..oh, and expect to need another sensor lead as well..( another tenner on top)

Okay then will hang on for the service

This is the first time the light has come on, I am at 57,500 miles and I have had the car since 0 miles, the car is now 1.5 years old. After reading some of the other brake pad threads they should have been changed much sooner than this, which made me think they were changed at the 30,000 mile service

    Better book it in

    Cheers

    OMG..30,000 miles between services..

It's something i'd never ever do, to leave it that long... i know VX say you can, but i'm still from the 'old school' of more regular servicing.. all our cars get an oil and filter change and a full wheels off inspection every 6 months or 10,000 miles.. prevention is better than cure in my book..Plus using VX parts etc the warranty is till intact..

fair enough if it's the firms car, but ours are bought with our own money, and after the house, it's the 2nd biggest purchase you make, so i tend to look after the cars better than VX want me to..

At That mileage i'd also consider getting the disc's changed as well as the pads.. VX do a kit.. and the full set of disc's and pads for the car come out at Just over £100 if you buy the parts right.. god knows what VX will want for fitting thou.. but it's only an hours 'book' job..

How much is the kit ??

To buy the parts right, where should I be looking

If I get a local garage to do it instead of VX will the dash light go out or does it need resetting now by VX.

Would I be advised to let VX do it, or is it okay to let a local garage do it

    Cheers

All the kits are the same price, so it won't matter what car you have..they all retail at £62.50 + Vat, but if you can swing trade you can get them for £44.32 + V per AXLE SET... go to your main dealers.. its one timewhen their genuine parts are cheaper than 'aftermarket ones'..

If you also get a sensor lead ( £7-£9 dependant on model of car) when the garage plug it all together the light will automatically go out, there is nothing to reset whatsoever...

To save a whole heap of cash,( as the brakes won't be covered by VX anyway under warranty) i'd give the parts to a local independant you trust to get them to fit them...as long as they know they have to use a 'windback' tool on the rear calipers then it would be a much better bet in my book..

Tell me the year and model of car and i'll give you some part numbers..

VX have quoted me £260 all in to do front and rear pads and discs or
£200 all in for front pads and discs and rear pads only

    What do you reckon

Nope, might have to buy the kits then and get a local garage to do it

As GSi3.2 said the kits are £73.44 each, so VX are charging me £114 inc VAT for labour
