    Question Temperature gauge problem

Hi,My temp gauge was staying at zero only rising when in traffic idling,so i had a new thermostat fitted this solved it for a while but after a few weeks it has reverted back to the zero reading, any ideas what is going on,i thought maybe it could be the sender but could be wrong.Regards Martin.

Yes it could be the sender.

Did the new one not come with a new sender?

Check its plugged in fully. The wire connector on the plug sort of clips in then if pushed harder clips a second time. Might of come a bit loose.

What type of engine is it? I had a replacement thermostat fail in a matter of months on my Z18XE. The first time I only replaced the thermostat, keeping the original housing and temperature sensor. The second time I fitted a replacement genuine GM housing (which comes with thermostat and sensor) and it's been fine since.

Examining the old housing, I found the thermostat had worn a groove in it, meaning that although there was nothing wrong with the thermostat itself, it would never seal properly, so act as if it had failed because the coolant could get past it.

Which is probably why Vauxhall won't sell you a thermostat without a complete housing assembly for the Z18XE...

a new sender is about 10quid and takes about 10 mins all in to fit so I'd start there as its probably that. but try ehat the others say and make sure it's plugged in tight first.
